chevron Diesel UPS 1000kVA+ : system description

Design

The Rotabloc UPS system is designed to provide battery-less UPS operation during periods of utility fluctuation, short-term loss or complete failure. The unique energy storage system provides sufficient ride-through to ensure that an alternative energy source (diesel-gen set) can always be connected.

The Rotabloc UPS system is designed to store an energy ‘charge’ during mains operation and then ‘discharge’ during periods of mains fluctuation and failure.

To achieve this KST have developed the Rotabloc energy storage system. This unique, and patented, system has the ability to store substantial levels of kinetic energy in its ‘flywheel’ and make this energy available if the mains becomes unavailable.

In practice, however, the level of energy needed is only enough to enable an alternate power source to be started. This ‘alternate’ source is invariably a standby diesel-gen set.

When operating synchronised with the mains the Rotabloc system acts as a synchronous compensator. In this configuration the input current supplied by the synchronous machine is in quadrature with the output voltage (VA). The machine does not absorb any active power except its limited no-load losses.

Diesel UPS diagramFurthermore, the network current is in quadrature with the choke voltage Vs. This voltage Vs represents the vectorial difference between the network voltage and the user voltage.

In the simplified diagram shown above the choke impedance is selected to be compatible with the synchronous alternator.

The Rotabloc Diesel UPS system provides voltage stabilisation & conditioning. It utilises the extended ride-through capability of the Rotabloc to allow remote diesel generators to start and supply ‘critical’ power via the rotabloc system.

Once the diesel generator is connected a secondary breaker can be closed to supply power to ‘essential’ loads,

In periods of utility fluctuantion or failure, the stored Rotabloc energy is discharged into the alternator to provide ‘critical’ load power.

The Rotabloc is a unique energy storage system that allows high levels of ride-through to be achieved without incurring excess size or weight. 1000kW systems weighs less than 11,000kg.

The simplicity of the Rotabloc Diesel UPS design provides the user with a range of both technical and commercial advantages. These can be summarised as follows:

  • Max kW per M² (250kW)
  • Min cost per VA (as little as 12p/VA)
  • Max ride-through per kg
  • Rotary UPS technical performance
  • Unity input power factor. (0.98)
  • Min life-cycle costs
  • Min maintenance costs
  • High Harmonic load capability
  • Input short circuit proof.
  • Output short circuit capability
